Symptom:  USB device sometimes fails or doesn’t work all the time.

Resolution: Disable Selective Suspend setting on USB ports in Windows Power Options

Windows 7 *

  1. Click Start > Control Panel > Power Options.
  2. Click Change plan settings for the selected Power plan.
  3. Click Change advanced power settings.
  4. Expand USB settings.
  5. Expand USB selective suspend setting.
  6. Change On battery setting to Disabled.  Click Enabled and a pull-down arrow will display with the options Disabled or Enabled.  Select Disabled.
  7. Change Plugged in setting to Disabled.  Click Enabled and a pull-down arrow will display with the options Disabled or Enabled.  Select Disabled.
  8. Click OK.
  9. Close the Edit Plan Settings window.

Windows XP *
** Warning: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Use Registry Editor (“regedit”) at your own risk.

  1. Click Start.
  2. Select Run.
  3. Type regedit.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Locate and expand the registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\USB
  6. Double-click the DisableSelectiveSuspend entry on the right-hand side of the editor.  Skip the next step if you see this entry.
  7. If an entry for DisableSelectiveSuspend does not exist, define it.  Define the entry by clicking Edit in the top menu.  Select New > DWORD Value.  Enter DisableSelectiveSuspend for the Name.
  8. Right-click the entry DisableSelectiveSuspend and select Modify.
  9. Enter 1 In the Value data box.  This value will disable selective suspend for the USB ports.
  10. Click OK.

Note:  With DisableSelectiveSuspend disabled the Power Management tab for the USB Root Hubs is not available.

* Note:  With the USB selective suspend setting disabled, your laptop or tablet will use additional power when running by battery and sleeping or hibernating.

* Note:  With the USB selective suspend setting disabled, the USB devices continue power usage as long as connected to the PC. Neither the USB ports nor any connected USB devices on your PC are suspended.
